Bozeman Symphony Presents Masters of Melody
BOZEMAN, Mont. –The Bozeman Symphony will spotlight its principal clarinetist and acclaimed horn section in Masters of Melody: Mozart, Copland, & Haydn, with performances on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 25, at 2:30 p.m. at the Willson Auditorium in Bozeman.
The program opens with the elegance and sophistication of Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, one of the composer’s final orchestral masterpieces. The work begins with a dramatic, slow introduction before bursting into a spirited main theme that foreshadows the beloved overture to The Magic Flute. A deeply reflective middle movement gives way to a lively and joyful finale.
Also featured is Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, commissioned by jazz legend Benny Goodman and performed by the Symphony’s principal clarinetist, Wendy Bickford. The concerto opens with one of Copland’s most lyrical and expressive melodies before evolving into an electrifying, jazz-inspired finale filled with glissandos and blues-inflected flair.
The concert concludes with the Concerto for Two Horns and Orchestra, attributed to Haydn, showcasing the brilliance and virtuosity of the Bozeman Symphony’s principal and associate principal horns Madeleine Folkerts and Elizabeth Schmidt. A landmark work in the brass repertoire, the concerto features exhilarating runs, elegant melodies, and a dynamic interplay between the soloists and orchestra.
These performances are made possible by the generous support of sponsors The Dovana Foundation, Calum & Tricia DeSouza, Bob & Donna Ritchie, Bruce & Kimberlie Jodar, Barbara & Ben Phinney, and David & Kippy Sands.
