Bozeman Symphony Plans Lunar New Year Storytime for February 11
BOZEMAN, Mont. — The Bozeman Symphony invites children and families to celebrate the Lunar New Year at a special Symphony Storytime featuring the vibrant sounds of Balinese percussion on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 10:15 a.m. at the Bozeman Public Library.
This free, interactive program — presented in partnership with the Library’s Toddler and Preschool Storytime — blends engaging storytelling with live music in a joyful experience designed especially for children ages 3–5.
This month’s Storytime features Bozeman Symphony Music Director Norman Huynh as guest reader, joined by Principal Timpanist Jeffrey Vick. Together, they will bring a beloved children’s story to life through the magical interplay of words and music. Following the reading, Vick will introduce young listeners to the enchanting sounds of Balinese gamelan through a short, hands-on musical demonstration, giving children the chance to explore rhythm and sound in a fun and accessible way.
Gamelan is a traditional Indonesian musical ensemble made up primarily of tuned bronze or bamboo instruments such as metallophones and gongs, along with drums. Known for its shimmering tones and lively, interlocking rhythms, gamelan music is often performed for ceremonies, rituals, and dance, making it a perfect way to explore global musical traditions during the Lunar New Year.
Families are also encouraged to mark their calendars for the next Symphony Storytime on Wednesday, March 14, at 10:15 a.m., again at the Bozeman Public Library.
