Who doesn’t love going to a carnival? So, what better way to conclude our 42nd concert season than to take you there—in three different countries. We begin in Rome with Hector Berlioz’s exciting romp, the Roman Carnival Overture.

Next we take you to Spain as we introduce violinist Janet Sung performing Lalo’s thrilling Symphonie Espagnole. We’ll conclude the program with the story of a puppet who comes to life at the Shrove Tide Fair in St. Petersburg. From this story, Igor Stravinsky found his truly unique voice in one of the most fascinating works of the 20th century—Petrushka.

Antonín Dvorák came to this country hoping, in part, to inspire a sense of nationalism in American composers. Out of that visit came one of the most popular pieces of music ever written—the New World Symphony—and began our country’s quest for its own music. Join us as we perform not only this classic work, but also two works of living (and popular) American composers.

We’ll begin with James Beckel’s thrilling Toccata for Orchestra commissioned by a consortium of American orchestras in 2007. Next we’ll welcome back Bozeman favorite, percussionist Joseph Gramley, performing the Marimba Concerto of Eckhard Kopetzki. We’ll end the day, of course, with Dvorák’s masterpiece.

Nothing says elegance quite like the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the intimacy of our annual chamber orchestra performances offers the perfect setting. We’ll present two of Mozart’s most famous works—Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (“A Little Night Music”) and his Symphony No. 40. We’ll also feature several of our principal musicians in Benjamin Britten’s playful Sinfonietta, Op. 1.

The centerpiece of this program will be one of the grandest works of the 20th century, and Gustav Holst’s greatest masterpiece: The Planets.

We begin with Beethoven’s portrayal of the heroic Prometheus who, in defying the gods of Mount Olympus, stole fire to bring warmth, light and enlightenment to mankind. Next, Ernest Bloch’s homage to the noble philosopher-King Solomon—or Schelomo, as performed by world-renowned cellist Amit Peled. Finally, you’ll see (and hear) an enormous orchestra on stage, and the women of our Symphonic Choir off stage as we perform Holst’s monumental achievement.

We’ll kick off our 42nd concert season with an evening of drama, passion and romance. First we’ll welcome back baritone Stephen Bryant performing a selection of arias from the operas Mefistofele, Simon Boccanegra and Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Then Stephen takes us from the opera house to Broadway crooning tunes from South Pacific. Finally, the orchestra will tackle the master romanticist Rachmaninov’s gargantuan Symphony No. 2.
